Inspire, Challenge & Engage
SCAU consists of three sections, Hydra, Lynx and Orion. Members of Hydra are aged between 7 & 10 years, Lynx between 10 & 14, Orion between 14 & 18 years. Each section has a section leader who sits on the Executive. Activities are catered for each different section with the overall aim being to develop our young people as they move through each section. More details of the sections can be found below.
Hydra caters for our youngest members. Sian Kennedy is our brilliant leader who, along with her team, provides some fantastic activities including art and crafts, games, cooking, camping - to name just a few. Due to the age of the children, we try and keep the numbers within the section to below 50 to enable our leaders to give the support that younger children need. Hydra meets at 6:15pm on Fridays at the Newman Centre on Jockey Road (accessible from the car park of St Nicholas Church)
Our Lynx section caters for children between the ages of 10 and 14. Jo Garvey is the section leader and she is ably supported by a significant number of leaders with Luke Hawtin and Dan Hull stepping in to run evenings when Jo is absent. Lynx membership is usually close to 80 in number which makes for a very lively environment for activities. Lynx runs from 8pm to 9:30pm on a Friday night and is based at Holy Trinity catholic church hall. Lynx leaders regularly utilise Sutton Park as a location for games and activities and the focus is again, on children having fun!
The section leader for Orion is currently John Garvey who is also one of our Trustees and also our Chair. Orion is the first youth group in the country to run the 'Changemakers Programme' which offers your people the opportunity to make positive changes in their community and in doing so, developing their confidence, communication and leadership skills along with their social responsibility to the world around them. Orion is also fortunate to have a range of leaders offering mountain biking along with a wide variety of fun activities.
